Dr Simon Merritt has been a consultant in Sleep and Respiratory Medicine since July 2009. He runs the East Sussex Sleep Disorders Clinic at the Conquest Hospital, East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust. He spent the formative years of his training, working alongside and being supervised by Professor Adrian Williams in the Sleep Disorders Centre, then based at St Thomas’ Hospital, London. He also performed some of his research in collaboration with professor John Moxham’s team in the muscle laboratory, King’s College Hospital, London. During this time he conducted research into the physiology of breathing during sleep of the morbidly obese patient, measuring oesophageal and gastric pressure changes, in addition to intra oesophageal diaphragm EMG. He also found an increase prevalence of and severity of Diabetic retinopathy in patients who had co-morbid OSA.
